Scrap Magic
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION:
Title: Scrap Magic
Course: Creative Metals 1
Artist: Cory Hitchcock
Teacher: Mrs. Johnson
Subject Matter: it is a keychain for a GMC logo.
Medium: Made of Stainless Steel and Copper.
Project Goal: my goal was to make a key chain that I would use on a daily basis to remind me of my experiences here at Lakeland High School.
PERSONAL REVIEW:
Something I liked about this project that I built it, knowing that I would have a use for it for a long time after high school. Something I could've improved on is planning ahead more. If I planned ahead more I wouldn't have had to make two sets of letters that spelled "GMC" and I wouldn't have had to cut an extra plate out of nickel. Something I would do differently if I had the opportunity to do so would be to watch the heat patinas more closely so I don't ruin them.
PERSUASIVE EVIDENCE & APPLICATION OF LEARNING:
In this project I cut out a nickel rectangle to serve as a background to hold all of my letters together. But I realized that the nickel wasn't shiny enough so I brought in stainless steel and cut it to size. I then cut the letters, "G, M, and C" out of copper. Afterwards, I placed them in the toaster oven where I was hoping they'd turn a bright red/pink in. This would add a nice contrast from the shiny stainless steel. Although this didn't end up happening as I overcooked the letters during the heat patina, they its color changed to white/chrome. So I eventually cut new letters with the jeweler saw and I made sure to eliminate any scratches with the use of tape to keep the texture as smooth as possible. The shape of all of these objects eventually fell inline with each other because they were all cut using precise measurements. I ended up drilling a hole on the background plate for the key chain and to eliminate the rest of the negative space. And since the plate is so small and the letters take up majority of the piece it shows emphasis onto the letters "GMC."
